1. 8th GRADE ORCHESTRA
Be sure to review the attached info sheet named Assessment Prep Letter concerning rehearsal dates in Feb. and Mar. as we prepare for assessment, as well as info concerning our Pre-Assessment Concert on Feb. 26 and Assessment Performance at Lake Taylor HS on Saturday, Mar. 7. Our Pre-Assessment Concert with Landstown HS Chamber Orchestra is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb.26 at 7:00 pm. Parents, we need you here as our audience for this performance!
6th Grade Orchestra: You will have a playing test in class Tuesday, Feb. 18 on Telemann Sinfonia. Be sure to practice all sections.
7th Grade Orchestra: You have a Schoology Assignment on Arlington Sketches to be completed no later than Feb. 14. Late submissions will result in a 15 point deduction. Later than 45 hours will result in a score of Zero.
DOMINANT STRINGS: You want to buy strings for your size violin or viola. Get medium gauge.
Violins: Get the set with a steel e string and ball end (not loop).
In order to get the most out of your practice time at home, here is a routine that you should follow. Remember to always get your homework done for your core classes, but plan a schedule for you and your instrument so that you can have time together each night, if possible.
EACH DAY: Practice each night using this practice routine:
1. Tune and open string warm-up (Right Hand)
2. Scale(s), Arpeggios, & 3rds (Left Hand)
6th Grade: Essential Elements Book: #2, 3, 4.
7th & 8th Grade: All keys required for the audition for District Orchestra on Saturday, October 20th.
3. Etudes. Examples: 6th grade: Essential Elements Pages 2-4. 7th/8th grade: All For Strings #12.
4. Repertoire. Concentrate your practice on the sections in the music that you have difficulty with.
REMEMBER: PRACTICE AT SLOW TEMPOS FIRST! Everything has to eventually be performed at tempo, but always begin with a slower tempo to allow your brain to process all of the different techniques, physically and musically.
Sometimes, you may want to just play your instrument without a certain task in mind. That is ok! Play through some of your orchestra repertoire from the beginning to the end. Also, what can be a lot of fun, is getting a Suzuki book for your level of ability, or a book of duets (Beautiful Music for Two Violins (or Viola, Cello, String Bass). Suzuki is published in 10 Volumes and Beautiful Music is published in 4. The duet books can be used at school in the practice room with a friend during class on the days when we are working/rehearsing another section of the orchestra. Since all of us are at different levels, and unless you know the books pretty well, it might be a good idea to ask me in class which book(s) would be best for you.
Have a name tag on your instrument handle when you bring your instrument to school. Make sure it has your name, phone number, and Old Donation School on it. If it is left on the bus, the bus driver will know which school it belongs to.
